September 12, 2021Methionine restriction extends lifespan through various mechanisms, including alterations in translation rate or accuracy, modulation of DNA methylation patterns and gene expression, changes in glutathione levels or distribution, changes in endocrine levels, hormesis, lowering of insulin and IGF-1 levels, activation of stress response pathways, reduction of oxidative stress, and alteration of gene expression. These mechanisms contribute to the beneficial effects of methionine restriction on lifespan.
Natural ways to restrict methionine in the diet include consuming a plant-based diet, emphasizing low-methionine foods, limiting high-methionine animal products, including methionine-restricted foods, and practicing intermittent fasting.
